How Do Crystals in the Inner Ear Cause Vertigo? Vertigo, a sensation of spinning or dizziness, can be attributed to crystals called otoconia dislodging from their usual position within the inner ear and entering the semicircular canals. These canals are responsible for detecting head movements and helping maintain balance. When otoconia become displaced, they can stimulate the sensitive hair cells within the canals, sending incorrect signals to the brain about head movement, leading to feelings

The Epley Maneuver is used to get the inner ear crystals (otoconia) back in place and stop the room-spinning vertigo (if you have BPPV, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo of the Posterior Semicircular Canal, the most common variant).
