Sudan plated lizard showing a tail drop! - Been a while since I showed the mechanism involved in a lizard dropping its tail, so here you go…. Referred to as caudal autotomy, from the Greek words meaning “self” and “sever”, dropping a tail is an amazingly effective defense mechanism for lizards. A lizard’s tail has weak spots called fracture planes, and these areas are where the tail can detach. Inside the tail are structures that loosely resemble plugs fitting into wall sockets…on one side of th
