This is a healthful take on a traditional Mexican drink that is very popular during Day of the Dead (around Halloween) and at Las Posadas (during the holiday season). The recipe comes from Diana, our Spanish Program Director. Natural unsweetened cocoa powder can be considered a health food. Cocoa powder has been found to improve artery function. Servings: 2 Ingredients 1 cup water 2 cinnamon sticks ½ cup rolled oats 1 cup unsweetened soy milk 4 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa or cacao powder 4 teasp

These Fudgy No-Bake Brownies from the How Not to Die Cookbook are a quick, easy, and healthful way to satisfy your sweet tooth. Interventional trials have shown that eating nuts improves artery function, and nut consumption may also improve blood sugar control, lower cholesterol, suppress inflammation, reduce oxidative stress, and feed our friendly gut flora. INGREDIENTS: 1 cup raw walnuts 1⅓ cups dates, pitted ½ cup raw almond butter ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder ⅓ cup crushed pecans METHOD: G

Who doesn't love a good smoothie? This one is especially antioxidant packed and holds a beautiful color that is irresistible! Cherries, blueberries, and watermelon may play a role in reducing muscle soreness, likely thanks to their anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. Watermelon also has the beneficial amino acid l-citrulline. Beets and greens contain nitrates, which may help improve athletic performance by reducing oxygen needs. Nitrates can have profound effects on the power plants within all of

Multiple randomized controlled trials have shown that kids do significantly better on executive function and memory performance tests (but not reading) in the hours immediately following the consumption of the equivalent of about one and a half cups of wild blueberries compared to placebo. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, researchers found that cognitive performance improved “across all measures" for kids consuming blueberries, and the more berries they had, the better. If there’s anything in life that we should demand evidence for, it should be that which affects the health and wellbeing of ourselves and our families. If there’s anything to put a little critical thought into, it should be what we eat on a daily basis. (https://bit.ly/2XjZhRN) Every year, I strive to read through every issue of every English-language nutrition journal in the world so busy folks like you don't need to. Our goal at NutritionFacts is to present you and your doctor with the results

Just because vegetarians don’t have worse anemia rates than nonvegetarians, that’s not saying much, since up to 1 in 20 menstruating women suffer from iron-deficiency anemia across the board. Iron is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s an essential element vital for blood production. If we don’t absorb enough, we risk anemia. On the other hand, iron is a potent pro-oxidant. If we absorb too much, we may increase our risk of cancer, heart disease, and a number of inflammatory conditions.

Less than 3 percent of Americans meet the daily recommended fiber intake, despite research suggesting high-fiber foods, such as whole grains, can affect the progression of coronary heart disease. Watch the video “Can Oatmeal Reverse Heart Disease?” at https://buff.ly/3V3CDbv to learn more. Whole grains pair perfectly with soups, salads, and veggie stir fries. Try adding some of these delicious whole grains to meals: quinoa, oat groats, hulled barley, sorghum, millet, rye berries, and teff. | Nut

Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has donated this month. I'm thrilled to announce that we unlocked the $100,000 match, and we are all so grateful for the donor who generously provided it. If you haven’t yet donated, there is still time to get your contribution in before the end of the year. What we raise this month helps us plan for the year ahead, and we have a lot of exciting things in store, such as new webinars, a free email series on longevity (which will perfectly complement my book, How

The same foods that create the most greenhouse gases appear to be the very ones that contribute to many of our chronic diseases. Meat (including fish), eggs, and dairy were found to have the greatest environmental impact, whereas grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables had the least. (1) Simply eating less meat seems to be a relatively cheap and easy way to mitigate climate change, in contrast to many other factors outside our control. (2) A more plant-based diet may help prevent, treat, or even r

What benefits do greens have for our eye health? Dark-green leafy vegetables, including kale, collards, and arugula, are packed with the antioxidant lutein. The retina, the back of our eyeball, is an extension of our central nervous system—an outpouching of the brain during development. There is a spot right in the middle, which is what the doctor sees when looking into your eye with that bright light. That spot, called the macula, is our HD camera, where we get the highest resolution vision, an

Scientific evidence supports the recommendation to follow a whole food, plant-based diet for healthier looking skin. Population studies have found that healthy diets tend to be associated with less severe facial aging. This is likely because unhealthy foods may increase the oxidative stress load, be pro-inflammatory, and contain or produce advanced glycation end products, whereas healthier foods may provide protection by having an inside-out sunscreen effect, stimulating collagen production and
