Moganite refers to a mineral closely related to quartz. Quartz is Si02 and crystallizes in the hexagonal system. Moganite is also Si02, but it crystallizes in the monoclinic system. It was discovered in 1976 by a group of geologists lead by the Russian O.W. Florke.

It may be identified by careful powder diffraction analysis or Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Polymorphous (or polytypic?) with UM2000-61-SiO.
