Chiayi (/ ˈ dʒ j ɑː ˈ iː /, [3] Taigi POJ: Ka-gī; Chinese: 嘉義), officially known as Chiayi City, is a city located in Chianan Plain in southwestern Taiwan, surrounded by Chiayi County with a population of 263,188 inhabitants as of January 2023.

Chiayi (嘉義 or Jiayi) is a city and county that multitudes of travelers pass through on the way to Alishan (Ali Mountain), Taiwan’s most poplar high mountain resort. Alishan is in Chiayi county, but right on the border with Nantou county, and with sunrise views facing Yushan, Taiwan’s tallest mountain.. But there is much more to Chiayi than Alishan, if you’re willing to spend the time.

Finally, Chiayi Park’s northeastern corner is home to the city’s botanical gardens, boasting 140 species of plants and trees. Chiayi is more or less right along the Tropic of Cancer, so the gardens have served as experimentation ground for forestation experts. Chiayi Metropolitan Park is a great place to do your early morning walk.
