There is no significant difference between the two. Most dictionaries include a sense for thus defining it as a synonym for so, but I can't think of any cases where it would be used as such other than in thus far, so you shouldn't consider thus and so interchangeable other than in that one set phrase.

For some reason, I have always liked the phrase “thus far” as it seems somehow more specific to me in certain areas. In my opinion I think it would work with the above sentence example; although “to date” may still be the best choice. Still, I like it, but I try not to use it overly much, as it is more formal sounding.

I would say that "until now" suggests that the condition you are about to describe is at an end, "So far" suggests that the condition is still ongoing. "Until now, no all-woman team has won the tournament", means that an all-woman tournament just won for the first time ever.
