Just place the new impeller on the drive shaft and alingn the keyway and turn the drive shaft the same way as the motor would. I change my impeller every 18-24 months.

It's not going to affect the engine at all and will be gone after 2 minutes running. It's just a precaution so as not to run the impeller dry momentarily and to make the installation of the impeller into the cup a easy matter.
