Stick a couple magnets on each side, attach the lights and when the gate is open, they come on. When the battery gets low, I take them in the house, or hook up a small battery pack and recharge them.

OTOH, mine was more preventative in nature and corrosion was based on 'wear and tear' (things in and out of the bed) as well as hauling kayaks out of salt water. But nothing like you pictured.
