There are four levels of tsunami alerts: warning, advisory, watch, and information statement. Each has a distinct meaning relating to local emergency response. Recommended protective actions vary within areas under warnings and advisories.

The main mission of the warning centers is to help protect life and property from tsunamis. To do this, warning center staff monitor for tsunamis and the earthquakes that may cause them, forecast tsunami impacts, issue tsunami messages, conduct public outreach and coordinate with partners to continually improve warning operations.

A tsunami warning system (TWS) is used to detect tsunamis in advance and issue the warnings to prevent loss of life and damage to property. It is made up of two equally important components: a network of sensors to detect tsunamis and a communications infrastructure to issue timely alarms to permit evacuation of the coastal areas.

Like the earthquakes that generate most tsunamis, scientists cannot predict when and where the next tsunami will strike. But, the Tsunami Warning Centers know which earthquakes are likely to generate tsunamis and can issue tsunami messages when they think a tsunami is possible.

When a tsunami is detected and confirmed, data from the seismic and sea-level networks are fed into NOAA’s numerical tsunami forecast models.
