Taxanes are a class of diterpenes. They were originally identified from plants of the genus Taxus (yews), and feature a taxadiene core. Paclitaxel (Taxol) and docetaxel (Taxotere) are widely used as chemotherapy agents.

Taxanes are chemotherapy drugs that stop cancer cells from replicating. The taxanes paclitaxel, docetaxel and cabazitaxel can effectively treat various forms of cancer. They’ve improved survival rates for cancer.

Taxanes are natural diterpenoid substances occurring in yew plants, which received their name from a Latin term for yew, Taxus sp. The best known and to date the most clinically used taxane is paclitaxel (Figure 1).
