A rotating detonation engine (RDE) uses a form of pressure gain combustion, where one or more detonations continuously travel around an annular channel. Computational simulations and experimental results have shown that the RDE has potential in transport and other applications.

The rotating detonation engine is an improvement over the pulsing design, because the detonation wave constantly cycles around the chamber, eliminating the need to waste time and energy by purging. Because detonations create extreme pressures, a detonation engine can be designed without the additional compressor that's usually required.

NASA is currently investigating continuous detonation cycle engines for the application of lander and interplanetary space exploration missions. The performance benefits of a detonation cycle engine may allow for a broader design trade space and more compact geometry required for future missions to the Moon and onwards towards Mars.

2023年1月25日 · As NASA takes its first steps toward establishing a long-term presence on the Moon’s surface, a team of propulsion development engineers at NASA have developed and tested NASA’s first full-scale rotating detonation rocket engine, or RDRE, an advanced rocket engine design that could significantly change how future propulsion systems are built.

A revolutionary design, called a rotating detonation engine (RDE) has been the elusive the “holy grail” for decades. The supersonic dance happening inside an RDE promises to generate the same or more thrust as traditional rocket engine, but in a much smaller package.

These mechanically simple engines have no moving parts making them less complex than gas turbine engines and therefore potentially lower cost and simpler to manufacture. RDEs rapidly burn fuel via a supersonically travelling detonation wave; this in turn delivers high performance in a small volume.
