Hey ladies, just wondering what everyone thinks about promise rings. I've been with my girlfriend for 4 years now, I'm not exactly in a financial position to buy an engagement ring and we are only 20, but I was looking at promise rings for our anniversary. I just want to get her something nice. Not sure if a promise ring is "nice" or if it's cheesy or tacky or whatever.

Toxic because I think a promise ring could make a younger, more naive person feel pressured to stay in a relationship that, for a wide array of reasons, has already run it’s course. A promise ring could also be used as a means for a commitment-phobe to mislead and string along a partner (Idk about you but I think that’s pretty toxic).

Perhaps in thus interpretation, Elster & Ariane both promise to survive no matter what form they take & search out for each other in each next life.
