Meibomian gland tumors occur in older dogs over the age of eight. The three most common types are meibomian adenoma, meibomian epithelioma, and meibomian adenocarcinoma.

Chalazion are ruptured Meibomian glands that cause local inflammation in the region of the primary tumor (Figure 3). Lipogranulomatous blepharitis (a.k.a. chalazion) is frequently an accompanying diagnosis for many of our eyelid margin tumor biopsies.

Adenoma (a benign tumor) and adenocarcinoma (a malignant tumor) of the meibomian glands in the eyelid are the most common lid tumors. Because these tumors tend to be disfiguring as well as irritating to the dog, they are usually surgically removed—a process that is usually successful.
