Multiple antennas can be used at the transmitter and receiver, an arrangement called a multiple-input mul-tiple-output (MIMO) system. A MIMO system takes advantage of the spatial diversity that is obtained by spa-tially separated antennas in a dense multipath scattering environment.

This article provides an overview of the basics of MIMO-OFDM technology and focuses on space-frequency signaling, receiver design, multiuser systems, and hardware implementation aspects. We conclude with a discussion of relevant open areas for further research.
