Founded in 1934 by a Compton businesswoman, Irene Morris, who along with community clergymen planned and developed this cemetery primarily for the benefit of the local African-American residents who at the time were lacking a decent burial place, as many of the Los Angeles area cemeteries were still segregated at that time.
