2010年1月22日 · Re: Limewood vs. Basswood First, I agree that basswood may very well be the right choice in this case. Also, I tried, and did not have much luck finding US sources for lime. And, while both basswood and European lime are the same tree (linden), the climate and soil must make a difference. Thought I would share my observations.
Basswood vs. Lindenwood - Woodcarving Illustrated
The two tree species are from the same family of Tilia and would be cousins, the growing conditions for my local basswood and say German linden or limewood are nearly identical and if you took one of each basswood and lindenwood farm grown just for carving as close to as possible the same.

Since you're up in the heart of good New England basswood (Linden tree) country, you should be able to find a local sawmill or lumber retailer who carries it. Mark

2011年10月10日 · Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure that limewood and basswood are slightly different being from two different spiecies of Linden trees that are very closely related. I prefer carving basswood but I think the limewood looks better when finished as it has a richer color and a slightly more pronounced grain.

When the tree is grown too quickly or under adverse circumstances its wood will become frow: brittle, weak, or spongy." Fortunately we have suppliers who choose the proper trees to harvest.

2011年4月6日 · I already tackled the question whether limewood and basswood are the same (or almost) wood. I tried once a small piece of basswood and I can say that there is a "palpable" difference. Another good wood (and available in Europe) is Pinus Cembra. In my opinion it is better than limewood, but not as good as basswood.
