Restore pliability to that vintage straw hat | The Fedora Lounge
2015年6月23日 · From a recent 3 for $35 EBay win, I've been messing with a vintage Dobbs coconut palm hat. The hat was delivered with cracks in the crown and brim, which I was able to fix with Pliobond. I discarded the badly faded puggaree and restored the shape with some steam. During the steaming, I noticed that the hat became pleasantly pliable.
Restore Straw Hats - The Fedora Lounge
2019年8月22日 · Aloha everyone from Hawaii. I am seeking any information people might have about restoring straw hats. I picked up a couple of woven lauhala hats (plaited from stripped pandanus leaves) about 40 years ago in Tahiti. They are still in good shape, but I worry about the fibers drying out and...
Help with repair to a straw hat - The Fedora Lounge
2009年6月1日 · When it comes to dealing with straw, you are kinda out of luck. You can take a tape and apply it to the inside of the hat to hold the tear together. Your problem is not unique. That's what happens when a good ole straw gets stored with no moisture around it. I make sure my panama hats get a little moisture about once a month.
The Trials and Tribulations of Hat Stiffener
2011年4月13日 · For the record, they don't use natural shellac any longer primarily because it has a color and can discolor the hat. These days they use a synthetic resin. While old fashioned shellac would certainly work since that's what they used in the pre-plastics era, I would suggest buying something like Kahl hat stiffener, which is one of the modern resins.
Hair Spray to Stiffen Felt? - The Fedora Lounge
2009年4月21日 · Even Kahl's Hat Stiffener didn't do much although I drenched the brim in it and let it dry for several days. I wasted two bottles on it. The brim is stained now by the hat stiffener. At nearly $20.00 a bottle, I probably would have been better off just tracking down another Featherlite hat for about $45.00 instead of fiddling with the old one.
Questions: The lowdown on Palm Leaf hats... - The Fedora Lounge
2020年4月11日 · The palm leaf type of straw is the best for durability (unless you like plastic), and maybe the first type of straw used in hats centuries ago. Cane straw breaks more easily and paper hates water --- my experience trying to reshape it with water or steam has several times resulted in what looks like "runs" when an individual straw in the weave ...
Source for replacement liners and sweatbands for Vintage Stetons?
2011年8月26日 · About the only way you are going to get a vintage liner is to buy a junked Stetson and just use the liner and throw away the hat. I have done this a few times. If you can get a junky Stetson for under $20 it is worth getting it for the liner if you need a liner. Otherwise, all hat makers have blank liners that you could have put into your hat.
Dyeing hats? - The Fedora Lounge
2006年9月8日 · Yes. Good results are much likelier if you 1.) use a dye specifically formulated for protein fibers, 2.) use enough of that dye and a large enough vessel, 3.) gradually increase and then gradually decrease the temperature of the dye bath (so as to avoid "shocking" the felt and causing it to shrink even more than it likely will), and 4.) use a …
Fur Felt- repair / restoration - The Fedora Lounge
2006年3月12日 · But according to our panamabob's website, you really don't want to do that with a high-quality straw hat. He says that breaks in straw can be repaired with new straw woven in, and that using glue just makes for a larger area for the reweaver to repair and makes that repair all the more conspicuous. But then, if the cost of repairs would exceed ...
Softening a hat - The Fedora Lounge

Wool will give a serviceable life but does't hold up like fur felt usually. Many members have a wool hat or two in their collection, and they tend to be an early acquisition.
