Water and fire shaped the Everglades, which experienced frequent flooding in the wet season and droughts in the dry season. The Everglades encompass freshwater habitats, hardwood hammocks, saltwater habitats, cypress swamps, saw grass marshes, mangrove forests, and subtropical pine forests.

During the late 1800s the Florida state legislature declared that the Everglades, long viewed as having no value, should be repurposed and turned into profitable farmland. Dredging of the land was the first step in reclaiming the Everglades.
