Who Are the Dominican Friars? Dominican Friars belong to the worldwide family of friars, sisters, nuns and laity which comprise the Order of Preachers¹ (also sometimes referred to as “the Dominicans”).

The Order of Preachers (Latin: Ordo Prædicatorum, abbreviated OP), commonly known as the Dominican Order, is a Catholic mendicant order of pontifical right that was founded in France by a Castilian priest named Dominic de Guzmán. It was approved by Pope Honorius III via the papal bull Religiosam vitam on 22 December 1216.

During the first century of the Order’s existence, Dominican friars served as preachers, inquisitors, canon lawyers, theologians, and teachers at intellectual and spiritual centers such as Paris, Bologna, Orvietto, and Rome.

Dominican friars are engaged in an incredible spiritual adventure: living from the passion for the salvation of souls which, eight centuries ago, set fire to the heart of St Dominic and to the hearts of his first companions.

During the Middle Ages, these qualities led to us being given the general title of “brothers” (friars) to distinguish us from the “monks” proper. A final point of distinction exists that differentiates us from the newest type of institute: the clerics regular (e.g. Jesuits).

What is a Friar? In 1216, St. Dominic brought together a band of friars (from French “brother”), united by “a holy desire to embrace poverty, profess the regular life and commit [themselves] to the proclamation of the word of God, preaching everywhere the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
