The Damrak is an avenue and partially filled in canal at the centre of Amsterdam, Netherlands, running between Amsterdam Centraal in the north and Dam Square in the south. It is the main street where people arriving at the station enter the centre of the city.

On the one hand it’s home to utterly forgettable tourist traps like the ‘Sex Museum,’ the ‘Medieval Torture Museum,’ and cheesy cheese shops Amsterdammers abhor.

The Damrak was a canal before it was filled with cement during the 19th century, making way for gift and food shops, hotels, bars and eateries. The body of water at the Stock Exchange is all that remains of the erstwhile harbor. The gabled houses backing onto this stretch of water are among the most picturesque in Amsterdam.

Damrak is the main street in Amsterdam City Centre directly opposite to the Centraal Station however, it isn't really an attraction; its a collection of restaurant and souvenir shops. You can either see them from Damrak street or head a little further down and admire them from a slightly different angle by heading onto the Oudebrugsteeg and snapping photos of them from there. The bridge view also offers a stunning vista onto the main train station.

The Damrak is the original mouth of the Amstel river – rak being a reach (straight stretch of water). The river flowed from a lock in the Dam into the IJ. In the 19th century the canal was filled in, except for the canal-boat docks on the waterway's west side. The gabled houses backing onto the water are among the city's most picturesque.
