"Cause for" seems to mean "a valid reason for", as in "cause for alarm". "Cause of" implies a causal relationship, as in "this is the cause of that". I personally can't think of many contexts where "cause for" would be appropriate other that "cause for alarm" and phrases similar to it.

So, when determining the entity that "which" connects back to, you should see that invisible word "fact" as replacing everything in the first part of the sentence, and then you can see that it must be singular.

2011年4月28日 · I think cause is an etymological spelling (it shows the connection to because more clearly), but as far as I know it is not pronounced like the noun cause. The conjunction cause has a short vowel sound or a schwa (for me /kɒz/ or /kəz/) but the noun cause has a long vowel sound (for me /kɔːz/).
