Managed to get it into pairing mode (I think that's what it's called -- watch face now shows an apple watch and an iPhone side-by-side). Phone will then pop up with a message "Recover Apple Watch".

2024年10月3日 · If this has happened to you after trying all the usual things i have discovered that my Apple watch series 3 has the iOS 8.8.1 (which unfortunately is all it’s capable of updating to). The. STRAVA app as from Oct 2024 requires an IOS 9 to function and therefore has gone from my watch. So sad - i loved using Strava on the watch.
