Amaranthus blitum, commonly called purple amaranth [1] or Guernsey pigweed, [2] is an annual plant species in the economically important plant family Amaranthaceae.

Livid amaranth, in the family Amaranthaceae, is a summer annual pigweed, distinguished by a prostrate to ascending growth habit (most pigweeds grow upright) and a notch or cleft at the tip of the leaf blade. Livid amaranth appears to be increasing in abundance in the Southeast.

First published in Sp. Pl.: 990 (1753) The native range of this species is Peru to Brazil and N. Argentina. It is an annual and grows primarily in the subtropical biome. It is used as animal food and a medicine, has environmental uses and for food.

Native to the Mediterranean, livid amaranth was formerly cultivated as a vegetable in Europe, and in this way was introduced as a weed in much of the world, including parts of North America. It has been found in sandy, disturbed areas in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
