The jetliner is powered by 36,600–43,500 lbf (163–193 kN) Rolls-Royce RB211 or Pratt & Whitney PW2000 underwing turbofan engines for a 255,000–273,000 lb (116–124 t) maximum takeoff weight (MTOW). The 757 has a 2,000 sq ft (185 m 2) supercritical wing for reduced aerodynamic drag and a conventional tail.

The first PW2000 series engine, the PW2037, powered the Boeing 757-200 and entered service with Delta Air Lines as the launch customer for the civil aviation version of the engine.

The A321XLR dethroned the 757 by being more advanced which shouldn’t come as a surprise as it is much newer than the 757. It boasts a higher range than the 757 and is astronomically more fuel-efficient, thanks to its modern engines.

Pratt & Whitney's PW2000 engine covers the mid-thrust range from 37,000 pounds to 43,000 pounds. The PW2000 powers all models of the twin-engine Boeing 757, and is the exclusive power as the F117 for the four-engine C-17 Globemaster III military transport.
