Python 2.6 (final) was released on October 1st, 2008. There are a huge number of new features, modules, improvements and bug fixes. Python 2.6.5 was a maintenance release for Python 2.6.4, fixing dozens of issues in the core, builtin modules, libraries, and documentation. Python 2.6.5 final was released on March 19, 2010. Python 2.6 is now in bugfix-only mode; no new features are being added.

Whenever possible, Python 2.6 incorporates new features and syntax from 3.0 while remaining compatible with existing code by not removing older features or syntax.

My root need for pip for 2.6 is explained in this thread. Just follow the instructions here: Securely download get-pip.py (this is the 2.6-specific file, link from Ricardo Iramar's answer). sudo python2.6 get-pip.py. and you'll be all set. This will install pip for Python 2.6, and won't touch your version 2.7 installation.
