Like, I understand the Secret Service goes through extensive lengths to protect him and do a damn good job of it but what do they do to protect against something like an illegally obtained Barret 50-Cal which has a range of well over a mile or some military grade mortars with ranges up to 2600 yards.

I’m not a personal security/military strategy specialist by any means, but I’m fairly certain that snipers normally want to be high up, and a little further back from their target than I imagine most Secret Service agents operate. I suspect that Trump wanted to bring the biggest guns that he had available with him.

Even so, the secret service was there about a week in advance. They did a full walk through of the buildings as well as the grounds (including the woods). The specific places the president would be were labeled "clean areas" after the sweep and no one except secret service was allowed in that area before the presidents arrival.
