The two main areas of Jerusalem's temple proper are the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies. The Holy Place contained a seven-branched candlestick, a golden altar on which to burn incense and a table on which showbread (shewbread) was placed.

The apostle Paul writes, “do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you” (1 Cor. 6:19-20)?

Jerusalem's temple, the restoration of which was begun under Herod the Great in 20 B.C. and finished in 65 A.D., is referenced at least 100 times in the New Testament. This magnificent building was the backdrop of several major events not only in Christ’s life and ministry but also in the early ministry of his apostles.

The Temple in the New Testament: In the New Testament, the Temple continues to play a crucial role. Jesus' life and ministry were closely connected to the Temple. He was presented at the Temple as a child (Luke 2:22-38), and He taught and performed miracles there during His ministry (Matthew 21:14).
