Fashion in ancient Rome was not anything like the fast-paced industry of today. Styles of ancient Roman clothing and jewelry changed slowly across the centuries.

During the triumph, the Roman chief put on a purple toga (toga purpurea), often coloured (toga picta), which eventually became the costume of the emperor (trabea). For the time of mourning or political crisis, a dark toga – toga pulla – was worn.

In costume, as in art, the trend was toward a more ornate, richly coloured, more varied, and, especially in the later days of the empire, very luxurious attire. Roman dress also reflected a distinct division of social class, with certain colours, fabrics, and styles reserved for citizens and important personages.
