SUV. In my mind SUV builds are all about moving fast and light. The ideal setup is intended for 1-2 people sleeping in the vehicle with a minimalist set of gear. You sleep in the back (critical to an SUV making sense in my mind) and only carry what you need to keep within the more limited payload and avoid long setup/takedown cycles.

If I was to build a dedicated overland rig it would definitely be a FJ Cruiser. I just use our new Subaru Forester, has a lift kit, A/T tires, rear sleeping platform, Warn bumper. It's taken us everywhere we've wanted to go so far and has yet to get stuck, we've gone to some pretty remote locations around Alaska in it and it's handled every bit.

2020年11月9日 · Personally I think Lexus is the exception to this rule. But I respect and understand that line of thinking. Check out some GX overland builds. They are pretty cool for just adding tires and taking off the running boards. But I love my old Lexus and it is a tank.

2021年6月21日 · If you are doing dirt roads only you dont even need 4x4 or an suv. Get a reliable model, rust free, go over it and fix all the gremblins while driving it locally for a few months, then go! There are a ton of 90s and early 2000s out there with a ton of life left.

2022年11月3日 · Really depends on what you want to do with it, I know "nice" is pretty subjective, most new cars are very nice and the trucks OP listed are great. What I mean is more reasonable and capable offroad than a 20 foot truck meant for pulling things. Every single popular overland SUV is better in every category except towing.
