Variceal hemorrhage occurs at a yearly rate of 5% to 15%. The most important predictor of hemorrhage is the size of varices; the larges varices are at highest risk of bleeding. Other predictors of hemorrhage are decompensated cirrhosis (Child B/C) and the endoscopic presence of red wale marks.
