Science 2020-2024: A Vision for Scientific Excellence represents a departure from past Science Plans in that we present four cross-cutting priorities and accompanying strategies that reflect our shared values and are directly responsive to changes in the broader ecosystem in which we work.

NASA plans to expend roughly US$2.8 billion on the Mars 2020 mission over 10 years: almost $2.2 billion on the development of the Perseverance rover, $80 million on the Ingenuity helicopter, $243 million for launch services, and $296 million for 2.5 years of mission operations.

The plan, arranged by priority areas, provides a brief description of our intentions and high-level objectives associated with each, and speaks to new cross-cutting opportunities, such as SMD’s role to accelerate open data and open-source science.

The Mars 2020 mission spacecraft that includes the Perseverance rover will launch to the Red Planet in July or August 2020 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. With the help of celestial mechanics, the spacecraft will arrive at Mars about seven months later.
