The Carl Schurz Memorial Monument in Morningside Park in New York City honors one of the foremost German-Americans in U.S. history: Carl Schurz (1829-1906). The Vienna- born sculptor who created it, Karl Bitter (1867-1915), studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna before immigrating to America in 1889.

2016年10月4日 · Built in 1913 within a large brick-paved plaza projecting from the promontory at Morningside Drive and 116th Street, the monument consists of a full standing bronze portrait of Schurz in the center of a granite exedra (curved bench) with carved reliefs framed by two ornamental bronze luminaires.

Schurz is also honored by Karl Bitter’s statue of 1913, located at Morningside Drive and 116th Street.

The NYC Parks Department website explains: 'This impressive monument to soldier, statesman and journalist Carl Schurz is the result of a collaboration between the distinguished sculptor Karl Bitter (1867–1915) and renowned architect Henry Bacon (1866–1924).

The most tranquil location in Carl Schurz Park is a cul-de-sac at the base of East 87th Street now known as the Peter Pan Garden, named for the statue it features. Designed by sculptor Charles Andrew Hafner in 1928, it was formerly located in the old Paramount Theatre on 42nd Street, venue to Frank Sinatra and Duke Ellington.

2021年8月6日 · Carl Schurz Park is home to a statue of Peter Pan, the fictional character from J.M. Barrie’s 1904 play and 1911 novel “Peter and Wendy.” Schurz, a German-American statesman who played a major role in the abolition of slavery in America and served as Secretary of War under President Lincoln, is buried at Schurz Memorial Chapel.
