The Minnesota House has rejected a bill that would have banned transgender athletes from competing in girls' and women's sports.

Republicans argued the bill was essential to protecting women and girls, but also made clear they were bringing it up to portray Democrats as outside the mainstream. It stalled in the Senate.

The House passed a similar Republican-led measure in January and President Trump signed an executive order on the issue last month.

A bill that would ban transgender athletes from girls’ sports failed Monday on a party-line vote in the Minnesota House of Representatives. The measure called for restricting participation in girls sports at the elementary and secondary school levels to biological females as determined by genetics and reproductive organs.
