Piles of mud and dirt have covered the streets as torrential rain battered the popular holiday island. The entire island of Lanzarote - the easternmost island of the archipelago - is also under a weather warning.

Tourists have been warned to stay indoors as heavy flooding swept debris through the streets of the Canary Islands. Video and pictures from the town of Telde, one of the worst hit areas on the eastern half of Gran Canaria, showed cars being swept out to sea by muddy flood waters.

Gran Canaria’s airport has been closed by flooding a day after cars were swept down ravines and into the sea off Spain ’s Canary Islands. No one has been reported injured in the floods, but they have caused significant damage to property, particularly around the town of Telde.
