Violent tornadoes ripped through parts of the U.S., wiping out schools and toppling semitractor-trailers in several states.

The deadly storm system arrived on the East Coast on Sunday after thunderstorms and tornadoes swept through the South and Midwest.

A series of storms that kicked up wildfires, tornadoes and dust while barreling across seven states over the weekend have left at least 39 people dead and dozens injured.

Tornadoes were also a large threat. The Midwest was under a level 4/5 risk for severe weather on Friday and Dixie Alley was under a level 5/5 risk for severe weather on Saturday. The threat of tornadoes was elevated this time around because of an extremely conducive atmosphere.
