The Boulder Police Department lifted a mandatory shelter-in-place order that was in place for several hours Monday as SWAT members attempted to negotiate with an armed suspect who ultimately took his own life.

A University of Colorado Boulder emergency alert was issued Monday afternoon asking the public to avoid the area of the Folsom Parking Garage and Champion Center and shelter in place. In a 2:39 p.m. post on X by CUPD, the university said there was a large police presence in the area but did not provide additional information.

The suspect involved in a standoff with police on Monday has been identified as Joshua Provenza, a 20-year-old former probationary firefighter with Boulder Fire-Rescue.
