CBS has taken a leap of faith, greenlighting the first daytime drama on any network in 25 years, at a time when the genre's future seems to be hanging by a thread. But "Beyond the Gates" - which had its premiere on Feb.

The CBS soap opera debuts on Monday, focusing on a family living in a wealthy D.C. suburb. "This is not your grandmother's soap opera," says star Tamara Tunie.

It’s been more than 25 years since a new daytime drama has entered the chat, plus an additional decade since one has been led by a predominantly Black cast, so it’s fair to say that Monday’s premiere of Beyond the Gates (CBS,
