The only road with access to the rainforest in Olympic National Park has been closed since December 2024 from a washout, with funding uncertain.

Washington state is providing more than $600,000 to help repair the lone access road to the Hoh Rain Forest, which officials say should allow the popular area of Olympic National Park to reopen sometime in May.

Washington state will fund repairs to the Upper Hoh Road, which washed out late last year. “Heavy rains washed out part of the road in December and the road has been closed ever since,” Gov. Bob Ferguson said during a press conference in Seattle on Thursday.

The road is the only way to access the Hoh Rainforest and it’s been closed since December due to heavy rains which washed away portions of the road.

A popular destination in the Olympic National Park has been closed with no timeline for reopening. Because the Upper Hoh Rain Forest Road is the only route to the rainforest’s trailheads, its closure could lead to canceled summer plans and disappointed tourists.

The only road going into the popular destination is closed due to storm damage and the federal funding needed to repair it has been delayed.

Bob Ferguson announced on Thursday that he directed the use of $623,000 from the strategic reserve account on an emergency basis to fix the access road to the Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic National Park.
