The centrifugal supercharger (pictured right) operates similarly to, and also looks a bit like, a turbocharger but is driven by the engine’s crankshaft via a belt rather than by exhaust gases.

A turbocharger is driven by the exhaust energy. This could indicate that the turbo operates for free, whereas the supercharger steals energy from the crank. However, this is not the full story.
