Over the centuries, York County’s estimated 360 mills, a number gleaned from an 1876 map, served as community meeting places.

Boat operators would unload their grain from upriver. In 1810, a Baltimore enterprise built three huge mills to grind wheat and send the boats back home with a payload of manufactured goods.
