The Indian government had asked Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) to provide the state-backed GOV.in app store available in the companies' app stores, Bloomberg News reported.

The Indian government wants its own state-backed apps to be pre-installed on every iPhone and Android phone, but Apple and Google are expected to refuse.

India is trying to pry open the doors of the world’s biggest app stores, setting up a likely clash with Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc. over social services, safety standards and access to the country’s smartphones.
