Former U.S. Rep. Mia Love of Utah, a daughter of Haitian immigrants who became the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, died Sunday.

Mia Love made history in 2014 when she was elected as the first Black Republican woman to serve in Congress, representing Utah's 4th district.

She was 49 years old. Love was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2022 and had most recently been receiving treatment as part of a clinical trial. The former two-term lawmaker’s family had said earlier this month that Love was no longer responding to treatment.
