Geneva, N.Y. — 50 dead snow geese discovered on the west side of Seneca Lake are undergoing tests for bird flu, officials said. The geese were found at Kashong Point in Geneva, prompting Ontario and Yates County public health officials to initiate testing.

DEC received 12 dead geese collected from Otisco Lake and sent them to Schuler’s lab. Initial test results are “presumptive positive for HPAI,” DEC said, referring to highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly known as avian flu or bird flu. HPAI is also suspected to have recently killed scores of waterfowl on Seneca Lake.
