Microsoft has announced the retirement of its long-standing communication service, Skype, set for May 5. The tech giant is pushing users to transition to Microsoft Teams, a more comprehensive platform for communication and collaboration.

Microsoft will be shutting down Skype, the company's telecommunications application, on 5 May 2025. In a statement on Friday (28 February), president of Microsoft 365 collaborative apps Jeff Teper said the company will be retiring Skype to focus on Microsoft Teams, its modern communications and collaboration hub.

Microsoft will soon switch off Skype, a pioneering telecom and video call platform that emerged from the rubble of the dotcom era.
