Are reservations possible and are they necessary during busy times? If not, how much time in advance of a tour do you recommend to be sure I can buy tickets before selling out a tour?

I’ve gone twice and both times I just went and checked and signed up for a time. Once it was the next one in 10 minutes. Another time we signed up for an after lunch tour.

These are good answers given by other Trip Advisor members. It is a long distance to walk, and likely with a group that he would need to keep up with. Frail with a cane, stairs, cave, dim lighting in some spots - I wouldn't think that's a good combination. But a strong gentleman with a cane, good balance and some strength - should be fine.
