I have heard that people did not like the actual art itself because the famine victims look emaciated . I think the artist wanted to demonstrate the conditions during "the great hunger" . As to why there and how come only the Irish , Boston has been the home of the Irish who settled the area in Great numbers since the 1800's . Any statutes or memorials placed on Boston Common need to approved by several groups that dont always agree , and there is lots red tape. The location of the Famine Memorial might even have been private property at one time before it became park
