Your closest bike rental options would likely be in Lynchburg (~1/2 hour away) or Charlottesville (1 hour), as the area around the trail is quite rural. Road bikes would likely be fine for the majority of the trail but some of the section near Route 151 is quite sandy and has deep gravel- if you park at the Rose Mill Trail Head, there will still be 5 miles of trail to do without that issue. Also, I'd definitely recommend going along the road itself a little bit, as it follows right along the river a ways and there's hardly any traffic. Enjoy!
